First of all, congratulations! You’re engaged! This is such an exciting time, and I’m so thrilled for you. But let’s be real... along with all the excitement, you might also be feeling a bit overwhelmed. It’s completely normal to have a million questions running through your mind: Where do we start? How much is this going to cost? What if I make a mistake? Planning a wedding for the first time can feel daunting, but don’t worry!... I’ve got you covered.

As an event designer, I’ve worked with countless couples, and I’m here to guide you through these first steps. Let’s make this process less stressful and a lot more enjoyable!

Step 1: Let’s Talk Money

This might not be the most romantic topic, but trust me, it’s the most important one. Before you start making any purchases or booking anything, you need to figure out where the money for your wedding is coming from. Do you already have savings set aside? Will you and your partner need to save up? If so, how long are you willing to save? Financing could also be an option, but make sure to fully understand the terms before committing.

Setting a budget first is critical. Many couples make the mistake of buying things impulsively before setting clear financial priorities. This can lead to overspending in one area, leaving too little for other essentials. A well-thought-out budget ensures that every element of your wedding gets the attention it deserves without unnecessary stress.

Step 2: Picture Your Dream Wedding

Now that you have a sense of your budget, it’s time to envision the wedding you want. Take a moment to really think about the type of celebration that feels most authentic to you as a couple. Do you want something intimate and cozy, or a large, lavish affair? A traditional wedding or something a bit more unconventional? Maybe you’re dreaming of a destination wedding or something outdoors with natural beauty.

Your vision will guide many of your decisions, from the venue to the guest list and even the design elements. Having a clear picture will also help you allocate your budget wisely and avoid spending on things that don’t align with your dream day.

Step 3: Hire a Wedding Planner

If this is your first time planning a wedding, there are bound to be things you simply don’t know. That’s where a wedding planner comes in. I know hiring a planner might seem like an added expense, but it’s truly an investment that can save you both money and heartache. Mistakes made because you’re unsure of what to do can have a lasting impact on your wedding day; from logistical hiccups to overspending.

A planner’s experience and knowledge can help you avoid costly errors, connect you with trusted vendors, and keep everything running smoothly. You’ll be able to focus on enjoying your engagement while they handle the nitty-gritty details.

Step 4: Consider Event Design and Florals

This is where I come in! Once your budget and initial plans are set, it’s time to think about the look and feel of your wedding. Event design is about more than just picking flowers or choosing colours, it’s about creating a cohesive atmosphere that tells your story as a couple.

Think about what you want your guests to feel when they walk into your wedding. Romantic and elegant? Fun and vibrant? Sophisticated and modern? From the floral arrangements to the tablescapes, lighting, and décor, every detail contributes to the overall experience. As an event designer, I can help bring your vision to life in a way that’s unique to you.

Step 5: Take It One Step at a Time

Planning a wedding can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do everything at once. Break it down into manageable steps, and don’t be afraid to ask for help; whether it’s from your planner, your family, or your bridal party. Remember, you’re not in this alone!
